TYPES OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT

Heavy equipment operators use the machinery often for construction projects, regardless of the scope of the project. These pieces of machinery are the lifeblood of construction, resource extraction, and infrastructure. An up-to-date, well functioning and effective heavy equipment is an asset to any company and is essential for a project’s success. Worn-out and out-of-date equipment can hamper the construction process and impact the outcome of the projects. It may also be dangerous for onsite workers. For this reason, one must keep their equipment up to date. Financing the right piece of equipment can help you provide quality services to your clientele. Few types of heavy equipments are below:

1) EXCAVATORS

Excavators are a type of large machinery that consists of a hydraulic crane-like boom with a metal-pronged shovel on the end. Excavators are important and widely used equipment in the construction industry. Their general purpose is to excavation but other than that they are also used for many purposes like heavy lifting, demolition, river dredging, cutting of trees etc. Excavators contain a long arm and a cabinet. At the end of the long arm, a digging bucket is provided and a cabinet is a place provided for the machine operator. This whole cabin arrangement can be rotatable up to 360o which eases the operation. Excavators are available in both wheeled and tracked forms of vehicles

2) BACKHOE

The main difference the backhoe loader possesses from tractors is that it carries an adjustable shovel in the front and a small bucket found at the back, typically used to dig. Backhoe loaders are tire mounted, considered to be beneficial as they can be utilized in urbanized spaces and patios. The bucket can be interchanged in order to dig trenches of different sizes. The body of a backhoe resembles a tractor with an adjustable shovel in the front and a bucket in the rear. Although it is not considered small for heavy equipment it is excellent for operations that need multiple functions within a limited space

3) DOZERS

Bulldozers are used for shallow digging and ditching; short-range transportation of material; spreading soil dumped from trucks; rough grading; removing trees, stumps, and boulders; and cleaning and levelling around loading equipment. Bulldozers are pieces of crawler equipment and have many different uses. Equipped with a metal bucket plate, this piece of heavy machinery is used to push, carry, and condense any sort of loose material on site.

4) SCRAPERS

Scrapers are used to remove layers of earth across a vast area of land. When the scraper machine and its attached trailer pass over an area of dirt to be removed, the operator drops a sharp horizontal blade located in the trailer, or otherwise known as the bowl, into the soil below. As the scraper machines move forward, dirt is collected or scraped up into the bowl where it is then later collected when it becomes full. The two tools work together to clear an area and deposit the material into a hopper to transport it to a different area. Wheel tractor-scrapers are used to grade a surface, while also collecting the material that is loosened.

5) MOTOR GRADERS

A motor grader, sometimes called a grader or road grader, is a narrow multipurpose construction machine used to flatten a surface during grading projects. The working principle of a motor grader is it uses its moldboard, or blade, for rough or fine grading. However, the moldboard’s position and pitch can be hydraulically manipulated to complete a variety of tasks. The cutting edge can have a variety of blade profiles, including flat, curved, serrated and corrugated in order to break through the surface material.

6) PAVERS & ROLLERS

The rollers are designed to gently roll over a wide range of stone and concrete textures and thicknesses to provide effective joint consolidation without the risk of cracking, chipping, or damaging, which can happen when using traditional compactors. A roller is then used to compact and compress the asphalt. This fully flattened surface ensures that the asphalt is properly in place and smoothly finished.

7) SKID-STEERS

skid steer is a small, versatile piece of construction equipment used primarily for digging. It’s light and maneuverable, and its arms can attach to a range of tools for various construction and landscaping jobs. The skid steer will either have four wheels or two tracks. The front and back axles of each side are locked in synchronization with each other but can be operated separately from the wheels on the opposite side of the machine.

8) TRENCHERS

Trenchers may range in size from walk-behind models to attachments for a skid loader or tractor, to very heavy tracked heavy equipment. Trenching machines are available in two types namely chain trenchers and wheeled trenchers. Chain trenchers contain a fixed long arm around which digging chain is provided. Wheeled trenchers contain a metal wheel with digging teeth around them.  While trencher models can range in size, they will have an outstretched arm in the front, similar to a chainsaw. This front arm is equipped with a heavy metal chain to cut into the surface and uses a conveyor system to move the loosened material. Trenchers are commonly used for ditches, pipe laying, cable laying, developing drainage systems, and excavating hard surface layers.

9) LOADERS

Wheeled loaders are lighter than track loaders making them easier to control around job sites and more fuel-efficient adding value in decreased operational costs. On the flip side, track loaders offer more operator comfort and are often used on job sites to increase delivery. Track loaders are also softer on the ground and can reduce site clean-up compared to wheeled loaders. These two types of equipment are often used to load material onto dumpers or trucks, excavate raw materials, lifting, pushing, and moving materials around a worksite.

10) FELLER BUNCHERS

Feller Buncher consist of a standard four-wheel base and feller buncher gathers trees by wrapping multiple metal arms around a tree’s trunk and then snipping its base with a chainsaw. This type of harvester then carries the entire tree to a collection area where the greenery will be broken down by other machines
